download Noteworthy theme

Check out our latest theme, Noteworthy. It’s a magazine style theme with a heavy focus on the featured images, and is heavily inspired by the design of USAToday.com, infact you could call it an homage.

It supports all the usual WP features like custom menus and widgets, and also has a nice reveal/hide search box and some handy social links top of the sidebar. Couple of other things to note about this theme:

  • You must define featured images for your posts if you want an image to display on the home page or archive pages.
  • By default the home page featured article and the list of featured articles just displays the most recent posts, but the theme is coded so that you can define what exactly appears here using the built in sticky posts feature of WordPress. The latest sticky post will be the main feature with the big image while older sticky posts will be list to the right of this. That won’t be to everyone’s taste, but we did it like this because we wanted to be able to control what was featured at the top of the page. The tiled posts will always just be the latest.

UPDATE 01/03/13 – Just updated the theme with much better handling/resizing of thumbnails

  1. beautiful theme, but a strange thing happens… the last post don’t appear in the featured list.

    if i create another new post the last one appears …

    i don’t know what happens…

    • Hi Loris,

      By default the last post will be featured in the ‘hero’ spot with the big image with earlier posts filling the other Featured places. However the way I recommend you work the home page of you site is to flag the post important articles on your site as “sticky” the theme will then pull the most recent sticky post into the hero spot and the others into the Featured list, with all other posts under that. This way you can feature posts on your home page regardless of how old they may be.

        Eagerly waiting for reply!

        • Hi, it looks to me like they are using the regular WordPress gallery features to power this. It certainly isn’t any kind of special theme feature. YOU can learn more about using WordPress galleries here.

      • Hi Charles; for the past few months I started to blog, my site is bambinoides.com, hosted at Bluehost. Please check it out and any recommendations are most welcome.
        The past week I moved to Noteworthy and I love it; hats off! Still, I have a few problems probably due to my inexperience and not knowing any HTML:
        1) Post titles (permalinks) will not show over my Ipad photos;
        2) How to include a photo & logo on my header. Using “Unlimited FTP I transferred my stuff and nothing.
        3) How I add a favicon. Here I also used “Unlimited FTP” with no results.
        4) How can I change or add to the title “FEATURED” in English – “Títulos Más Recientes” in Spanish.
        5) How do I flag the post important articles as “sticky”
        I do appreciate if you could guide me to where I can find any references and the answers to the above.
        Many thanks and keep up the good work!
        Antonio

        • Hi Antonio,

          1. I’m not sure what you mean by this. Can you send me a screenshot to demonstrate the problem?
          2. You will need to edit the header template file to do this as the theme doesn’t offer the ability to easily upload your own logo. If you need help with this you might try Tweaky. Please also make sure you set up your theme as a child theme before making local customizations so that any future updates don’t overwrite your local changes.
          3. Here’s a how-to on adding favicons.
          4. You will need to edit the language file …/noteworthy/languages/default.po – This controls all the text elements of the theme. You can edit this will a program like Poedit.
          5. Here’s a how-to on making posts sticky in WordPress.

          Hope that helps.

          Charles.

          • Thank you so much Charles for your quick response and guidance. I will get to work on all items.

            Point No. 1 refers only when logged-in to the site with an Ipad. The problem being that none of my post titles that are over imposed on the post featured image will show in any of the blog pages. So in every page I get a block featured images and none of them with a titles.
            The same happens when visiting with the Ipad other Noteworthy sites like Mark Hickson’s, fabulous “disneybymark.com”.

            Thanks again,

            Antonio

          • Hi Antonio, we’re going to have to do some work on this so that tablets show the titles without having to mouse over (which you can’t do obviously on a tablet). On the list.

  2. Aloha! Great Theme! Please visit my website to see what I’ve done with it in just a few days.

    I have been looking for a news magazine format theme for months, but didn’t like any until I found yours.

    HELP: I need your advice on the best mobile plug-in to use with Noteworthy. My iphone readers are complaining.

    P.S. I moved your credit from the footer to “About Disney by Mark” page.

  3. I really, really like your theme, and I plan on sticking with it (see toward the bottom of this post), but I have the same problem. I size a photo perfectly for a thumbnail tile for a post. Once I maneuver that post into the hero box by making it sticky and the most recent, however, the jpeg is suddenly the wrong size. It’s bigger, with the upper left hand corner of the photo showing but not large parts of the lower right. I would prefer not to have to mess with the featured photo on a post in order to put it into the hero slot, as I want to freely bring posts in and out of the hero slot. But even if making special sizings were an option, I can’t seem to do anything to the photo to make it fit the hero tile. If I scale it down, it gets fuzzier (but stays the same size). If I scale it up, it stays the same size. A friend of mine who has put together five WordPress blogs took a look at the effect of the oversized photo that doesn’t quite fit in to the feature box, and thought it was really weird and cool. So for now, I’m OK, but it would be nice to have control over it. Thanks, and again, I really, really like this theme.

    • Hi Lloyd, glad you like the theme. Sorry you are having so much trouble. Are you setting the featured image for the post that will appear in the hero spot on the home page, ie. selecting the featured image using the featured image function bottom right corner of the post admin page?

  4. To be real specific, I go to “Posts” on the left-hand menu (while in the admin dashboard). From the list of posts, I click “edit” on the most recent post (non-sticky at this point). Down in the lower right-hand corner is something saying “set featured image”. I click on that. In the library, I click on an image — which is a PDF converted to JPEG of, say, 5 lines of lyrics from a song (a sample, not the whole lyric sheet). It has already been carefully sized to fit well into a normal tile in the tile of posts (not the sticky ones). I click on “Set featured image” in the lower right hand corner of the library. Then I publish the page. The photo does fit well. Every word is there, and centered correctly on the tile. Then I click on the word “edit” to the right of “visibility”. I then click on the word “sticky”, and on “Ok”. When I go to the tab in my browser (Safari) that has the public view of my site on it, and click on refresh, the post is now in the hero window. Only about half of the words show, because the photo is too big, and the lower and right portions are outside of the square. Thanks.

  5. In other words, any featured image going into the hero spot has to have a copy made and edited to fit the hero spot, and then you select that new one for the featured photo of that post. Then, when you want that post to go back to regular, you replace the new image file with the old image file that fits with the regular (non-sticky) tiles? That’s okay (although not optimal), but I can’t seem to change the size of the regular image to fit the hero spot. Scaling doesn’t seem to change the size at all, it only makes it fuzzier (or not). It’s been a few days, I’m trying to think how I got it to fit the regular tiles… Well, how about I go fiddle a little bit, while you answer the first question I posed in this reply? Thanks.

    • I’m a bit confused about your approach sorry. The image you are using as the featured image for the hero spot is here: http://showmewhatworks.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/The-options-6-32-bod-bold-791×1024.jpg

      Bu the featured images you are using for the other posts are resized like this: http://showmewhatworks.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/The-options-6-32-bod-bold-231×300.jpg

      My suggestion is to try and crop and resize your image to one size which works for the hero spot use that as your standard approach. You might need to play around until you find a size which works well for both. I tried this and it worked better, but not perfect for the regular thumbnail spot: http://noteworthytrends.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/test-image.jpg – You can download that image and try on your own site.

      Once you have figured out the best size that works for both you shouldn’t need to be change them.

      Sorry for the hassle, fair to say that the image resizing and thumbnailing doesn’t work perfectly for images with text as they don’t really work if any part of the image is cut off.

      • Hi Charles,
        I picked the exact same file from my library for all the featured thumbnails as I did for the hero featured image. The 791-1024 is not part of the filename of this particular image file in my library. I think Word Press either resizes some and not others when it pastes them into the featured slot for a post, or it picks out different drafts of the file, or both.
        Another data point: Once I have a photo selected for the featured post (or, I think, just for a regular thumbnail), I find that editing it’s size (i.e., playing with one of the numbers in the “ratio”) has no effect on the size, or the portion of the photo that gets cut off by WordPress — it just makes it more fuzzy or less fuzzy. Yet I know at one point I did something to effect its size (perhaps when I cropped it?) Weird.
        In any case, I’m probably doing something wrong from having my dummy side in charge, in which case, I apologize for the time and hope this turns out to be a productive exploration for you rather than a time sink. I probably won’t have time to really explore this to the point of coming to a conclusion until after Christmas (which is fine for me), but here’s what I suspect: Word Press (or Noteworthy, I’m not sure which), grabs images that are the wrong proportions and centers them via the upper left hand corner. So the lower right gets cut out if they are too big, or white space ends up on the lower right if they are too small (though I haven’t experimented enough yet to see if white shows up in the lower right if they are too small). If this is so, then maybe cropping to the right proportions is at least part of the answer. I measured your thumbnail tiles, and they are 2 5/8 inches wide by 3 inches deep. I think I need to turn that into a ratio (AFTER Christmas), and see if that ratio is the same as the hero ratio. Then I need to figure a way of cropping all images so they are that ratio, and then learn how to resize them to fit snuggly in the tile. (For some reason, though, as I said above, the resizing is just not happening for me). Anyway, do you have that ratio (3 to 2 5/8) handy? If so, that would be a good thing to put in a FAQ or instructional video or something — or maybe they already are, & I haven’t stumbled on them. BTW, are your tiles set in metric, and therefore, is the ratio more obvious to you than to someone from the USA who is still used to working with stone age inches & feet?
        In any case, I’ll get back to this on Wednesday (at which time I will play with the sample image you linked to me — thank you). And it’ll get straightened out when it gets straightened out. In the meantime, Merry Christmas if you celebrate that, Happy Holy Days if you celebrate some other tradition, and Season’s Greetings if you are an atheist.

  6. Hi Charles,
    This is getting more complex than I can deal with right now domestically. Is it morning in New Zealand now? What hours (New Zealand time — I’ll convert it to Pacific Standard Time) are you going to be at your computer in the near future? Thanks.

  7. I couldn’t resist playing with this in the wee hours, and have come to the conclusion that I need to spend a couple of solid days learning about bitmap images. This URL looks promising: http://www.studiograsshopper.ch/web-development/wordpress-featured-images-add_image_size-resizing-and-cropping-demo/#media-basics

    Also, I am wondering if WordPress 3.5 has some bugs in its media editing aspect, as it is behaving erratically, above and beyond any dummy factor on my part. Anyway, I hope to have a decent report after the holidays. If there are any tutorials you particularly recommend regarding images, please pass them on. Many thanks.

  8. Hi Charles,
    Just to report that “Test-image” got cut off on both thumbnail and hero. I’ll just leave it like that for now if you want to look at it. On Wednesday I will start reading up on images in wordpress, and see if there is something to show when you all come back from the holidays. Thanks so much for all your time. This really is a dynamite design.

    • Hi Charles,
      I’ve got the problem solved (The problem being how to get my Featured and Featured Hero images to show up correctly).

      The thing I discovered is that if the uploaded image is too big, even if it has the right proportions, it ends up being downsized-by-cropping on the right and bottom. So, in order to have control over what territory within the image makes it onto the screen, I need to have the jpeg (or png, or whatever) sized right, and proportioned right, before I upload it onto the server. That means I need to know the required physical dimensions in inches, and how many pixels at what pixel rate per inch that translates to.

      Here’s what I have come up with (using a physical ruler, after making sure my screenview was set to “actual size”):
      Hero image: 4 inches wide, 5 inches tall. At 72 pixels per inch (which seems to be the standard used by either WordPress or Noteworthy), that’s 288 pixels x 360 pixels.
      Featured images: 2.3 (2 and 3/10) inches wide, and 3 inches tall. At 72PPI, that’s 166 x 216. Note that the proportions of the Featured image are slightly off from the 4 to 5 proportions of the Featured Hero image. More on that in a moment.

      So, how to get an image to the right size before uploading? That depends on what software and what medium you are working with. If you are a photoshop whiz, you probably already know what to do. Since I was trying to get Microsoft Word text translated into the right size JPEG, this is the formula I came up with:

      In word perfect, I go to “Page Setup” and put together a custom template for a paper sized either 4 inches by 5 inches, or 8 inches by 10 inches. It doesn’t matter at this point, as the real sizing will happen after the conversion to JPEG. Since the Featured image proportions are only slightly off from the 4 to 5 proportions of the Featured Hero image, I use an 8 X 10 inch template for both, allowing WordPress (or Noteworthy?) to crop a little bit more off the right-hand and lower sides of the Featured images than I otherwise would if I were needing exactness. If I wanted exactness, I would come up with a separate document using a template with a proportion of 2.3 (2 and 3/10s) to 3 for the Featured images.

      After I get the Word document completed, I convert it into a PDF-X via the Print Menu, clicking on “PDF>Save as PDF-X” (although I don’t know if the X makes any difference, just that that is the format used by online photo book companies). Then I open that PDF-X in Preview, and use preview to convert it to JPEG, 72 pixels per inch, Highest Quality, using the “save as” function. The resultant JPEG has the right proportions, but it is always too big. If left as is, it ends up getting shrunk-by-cropping in WordPress, so I go to “tools>resize”. In that menu I make sure it is 72PPI, and then, viewing the dimensions in inches (rather than pixels), enter the height for, say, the Featured Hero (i.e., 5 inches). The width then adjusts itself. I save that. Then I go to “tools>adjust color” so that the text will show up boldly enough, and also to put in a background color for the tile that looks good with the theme. Then I make a copy, and size that copy for the Featured image. Then I upload both.

      Well, that’s it. Thanks again for coming up with this great theme. Hope you have a Happy New Year.
      Lloyd

  9. Addendum, those test images on my site look like the ink ran on the parchment — but I think futzing with the color editing a bit more will solve that. I won’t get around to doing that until next week, but I wanted to just flag that I am aware of the issue, if you were wondering.

  10. It’s a nice theme
    I have tried many ones
    Now I’m working on this great theme … Just there are some little issues I wanna rise :
    1- IE8 problem : theme doesn’t look properly with IE8 .. For example : The post titles are not displayed

  11. Hi Charles, this theme is awesome, just what I was looking for! I was fooling around and seem to have lost the cool little yellow category tabs that were at the top of posts (not sure how better to describe them…lol) I am in the process of building this site and really liked them and am not sure what I did to break that. I notice in two of the examples in the comments above that one website does not have them (adfiles) and one does (Disney by Mark). I deleted and re-installed the theme and they are still gone. Thanks for any help and thanks for the great theme!

  12. Hi Charles, I sent a reply earlier but it doesn’t look like it went through so here’s another one. They yellow category tabs were showing up here:
    http://www.keepersri.com/category/graphic_t_shirts/
    and also were on the top of the single posts and are missing on those pages:
    http://www.keepersri.com/kiss-love-gun-t-shirt/
    Also I have my home page set as a static page, but if I set it to posts they are also missing from there. Let me know when you have the time, thank you!

  13. @Charles. I really like your theme. very atttractive.
    @ Mark Hickson – Nice Work.

    I was thinking of using it but am getting these 6 html errors
    Error: is not recognized!
    Error: is not recognized!
    Error: is not recognized!
    Error: is not recognized!
    Error: is not recognized!
    Error: is not recognized!

    I thought maybe it was because I didn’t have my site fully set up yet ( I am trying it out on a site that is not live yet) but i check a few other sites that have it love and they are getting the same 6 errors. Is it an easy fix – and if so – can you tell me what I would need to do?

    • Hi Orninq, this theme doesn’t show the subtitle/tagline. You can of course edit the theme files. If you do, do it via child theme so your changes doesn’t get overwritten when we update the theme.

  14. Charles or Ryann – Love the theme! My question is this: how wide is the home page main container box…including the hero image and features headline? I’d like to place a slim 35px tall logo graphic as a cap on it. All pages would also have this same width cap at the top where now is white space. You help is greatly appreciated! –Greg

    • Hi Greg, the Noteworthy theme is a responsive theme meaning the width isn’t fixed and can change depending on how big your screen is. Try making your browser smaller (not maximized) to see how the width changes.

      • Yes, I like the responsive concept, yet I’d like to “brand” it with a graphic. Can I add a slim (40px high) logo in a stripe across the full-width under the grey nav bar links? Thanks for your response in advance! –Greg

          • Ryann – Will send you a screenshot image in an email to your wpthemes contact address. Looking forward to a bit of customization to make this adaptation successful. Plus, wpthemes will receive righteous credit and thanks!
            –your wp friend, Greg

  15. Charles or Ryann – Love the theme, yet want your help: what is the pixel width of the wide text/post left column? I’d like to place a 35px tall graphic logo across the top edge of the wide area, such that it shows on all posts and pages. Thanks for your help! Looking for your reply. –Greg

    • Hi Jason, this theme is a responsive theme and will require a bit more custom coding to add a header image to the theme. The image will also have to be made responsive using css too.

  16. This is a beautiful theme. The only downside is that I am getting 6 html errors that I do not know how to fix
    line 33 Error: is not recognized!
    line 48 Error: is not recognized!
    line 52 Error: is not recognized!
    line 75 Error: is not recognized!
    line 110 Error: is not recognized!

    I am hoping this wil be fixed because I would love to use it

  17. Hi there,

    Can you let me know the ideal size for images to show up completely on the home page, both on the main image and all the sub images below?

    Thanks,
    Caleb

  18. The moment I saw the theme, I remember seeing this theme before. This theme has almost the same appearance as the one used by USAToday website.

    Nice job guys, was so amazed someone has ripped off the design and make it as a WP theme.

    • Hi Michael,

      wp_head() is present in the theme. Not sure why the diagnostic tool you used didn’t see it.

      NextGen – just tested on clean installation. shortcodes work. What particular function didn’t work for you?

  19. I love your theme!

    I have a concern with the banner, I wish to change it so it is thicker and maybe so I can even insert my own… How would I do this?

    Also is there an easy way to change the font? I don’t feel it really suits the theme of my website.

    Thank you!

    • Hi Kai, Yes, you can change the appearance of the banner, fonts and upload your own logo, but you will need to edit the html in the header template and the style sheet which controls layout. This will require atleast basic knowledge of HTML. We are available for custom theme coding, so if this is of interest please contact us.

  20. Hello there, I recently started using this theme (which I love) and I logged into the Bing webmaster tools page. This shows three major SEO errors because the theme is showing multiple H1′s and they started to penalize me for it. Any suggestions on how I can go about fixing this or should I just try a different theme?

    • Hi Heather,

      Yes, the theme does have multiple H1s in it and strictly speaking that isn’t best practice which is why Bing Webmaster Tools is advising you of this. But I don’t think you are being penalized for it. Check out the top ranking pages for any given term in your market and I’m sure you will find pages which are not strictly coded to best practice SEO wise. If you think you are suffering some kind of penalty in the SERPs it is much more likely related to unnatural links or something of that nature.

      If you are concerned about this you could remove the H1 from around the blog title in the header.php template, but keep in mind you will need to add some alternative styling to make this look the same.

      Also, if you do edit any template or style sheet files please make sure you set the theme up as a child theme first so that an subsequent updates will not overwrite your customizations.

      Cheers

      Charles

      • I like it very much!I want to modify the number of Home Articles。I modify this file“index.php”?Which line?Thank you!

        • Hi, if you want to adjust the number of posts that appear on the home page (or any archive page) you do not need to edit any template files. Just go to WP Admin > Settings > Reading and adjust the number of “Posts that appear on the blog page”.

      • Thanks Charles, I did look around and now I’m not to worried about. It seems Bing just likes to ignore me until I started adding in Schema. Lol. I only have one more issue I can’t seem to fix. The google rich snippets tool keeps bringing back
        Warning: Missing required field “entry-title”
        Warning: Missing required field “updated”
        Warning: Missing required hCard “author”
        I have found sites telling me to go fix it in the single php file. But the items they are telling me to replace with a different code isn’t there. Such as the line , and “”, and lastly Find : .

        Again any help would be greatly appreciated :0

  21. Just trying out this theme. Liking the look (and having friends, etc. give me feedback).

    Would love to have the option for a custom logo at top – OR – ability to use different fonts.

    Also wondering if there’s a way to change the color of the social media buttons. They sort of get lost in the black sidebar right now. Would even prefer them in the yellow (or, maybe, they could be outlined in yellow to stick out more).

    Sorry if these questions have already been addressed – didn’t read through all of the comments.

    -Brad

    • Hi Brad, thanks for the feedback. All those things can be achieved, though you will need to edit some template files and style sheets. We are available for custom coding of themes. If you would like to so this please drop us a line.

      You might be interested in our new theme Magazino, which has just been approved and should be available for download from WordPress.org in the next couple of days. It also focusses on images for the home page layout, offers logo upload and let’s you choose whatever primary theme color you want, so might have the flexibility you need right out of the box.

  22. I’m just getting started with blogging, and have chosen your theme for my site. I really like it, but wanted to add a few comments I thought would be cool. I like to have lots of photos but switching through them isn’t as fast even when they are in a gallery. Here is a site that does it pretty cool, it pops it out when clicking on it and you can scroll from there: http://www.elegantthemes.com/demo/?theme=SimplePress

    Also if you can somehow figure out how to get the images to fit, like most have commented above that would be huge, especially cause you have 2 different sizes for the large on and smaller one that don’t work for both, so I have to pick a size and when it moves from the larger to the smaller it doesn’t fit or the opposite (don’t know if that made sense). Too bad you can’t have a thumbnail editor like facebook.

    Also at some point if you can switch it up to change all the colors instead of just the outside color (example font, grey boarder and header)

    • Hi Jacey, thanks for the feedback. The Elegant themes are really nice. Our free themes are always going to be much simpler that the premium paid themes from folks like Elegant for obvious reasons, but your suggestion to allow for more color selection is good and infact we’re already taking that approach with our newer themes which you’ll see as they are released. To achieve the gallery effect you want I highly recommend the FooBox plugin. It is a premium paid plugin but it does exactly what you are asking for and does it really well with built in share features and completely responsive image handling for all browser sizes.

  23. hi from france to everybody and first sorry for my english ,
    Just to say this theme is elegant and i like the visual impact of the recents post on index page.
    so just one problem about images on this page because sometimes after make an article (so it must appear on the page) the image do not appear. problem of size ? or something else ?….
    thanks

    • Hi, thanks for the feedback. Are you setting a featured image for each post? This is the best way to control which image is used for on the home page and archive pages.

      • ok thanks for your answer and i see now how to do just click on “put image at the one” at the bottom right of the page where writing the post. is that right ?
        just one thing makes me wrong before because sometimes image i put in the post is automatiquely on the post on the index page and sometimes not but now i know how to do to forced if does not appear.
        thank you very much and great job for all your themes
        (sorry for my english…)

  24. Thank you for an amazing and useful WordPress theme. I am new to WordPress and I am not sure how to change the displayed post from two in a row to three in a row-just like the layout in your theme. Can you explain?

    Also, can the feature image be turned into a slideshow?

    Thank you!

    • Hi Jackie, the theme is responsive to browser size, so when I view your site on my desktop computer it is displaying 3 columns. If you are seeing two columns (I suspect you are on a smaller laptop screen or have a small browser window open? There is not built in functionality for a slideshow in the main featured spot. You could customize this if you wanted to, but that would require knowledge of theme coding and the use of one of the slider plugins.

  25. Finally got most of it working. I ditched NetGen too buggy. Got weird problem with category widget. Works fine on Firefox but Safari and Chrome don’t show anything. Go to /blog and see for yourself. Now work in Safari but Chrome still off. Don’t have IE to test.

  26. hi charles
    me again to ask you is it possible in the index page where we can see recents posts to have the 10 recents posts but only these 10.
    i mean i would like to see the last 10 like the last on the top like it is but only the 9 following posts below because actually we can see the last on the top and the 10 above. do you know what i mean ? is it possible not to see the last post 2 times (in the top and just below as the 1 of the last post) but see directly the last of the 10 post on the toop and directly the 2nd of the lasts posts after? thanks

  27. This is a wonderful theme that we would like to remain with in our blog, but we’re having some trouble with the size of the thumbnail pictures on our front page. As you can see, it seems only the top left corner of the picture is being used in the thumbnail, which makes picture in general rather unattractive. Would it be possible for the thumbnail to cover a larger area? Perhaps even the entire shorter length/width of the picture and simply crop the extra width/length? Thank you!

    • Hi, yes this theme does handle images in this way. We’ve actually implemented better handling of thumbnails in our latest theme and will be updating Noteworthy to use the same approach soon(ish).

  28. Hey, I love this concept for the theme, and I really want to use it for my Colorado sports blog.. but what I need to figure out is how to set there to be a certain category (“featured?”) that will appear in the featured area or even the front page at all? Sometimes I post quick updates on my blog that wont have a featured image, so obviously I don’t want them to show up on the front page.

      • Hi Nick, the theme will display latest posts in the featured area by default which is what will always area in the grid as well. The best way to use the featured posts area is to flag specific posts as “sticky”. Once you have flagged one post as sticky the theme will only show sticky posts as featured. This way you can control what appears as featured while the grid will always display the latest.

    • Hi Nick,

      Thanks for using our theme,

      Unfortunately the theme didn’t have the featured on your need, however there is a solution for that.

      Add this code in your functions.php file.

      <?php

      add_action( 'pre_get_posts', 'rs_category_from_blog' );
      function rs_category_from_blog( $query ) {

      global $wp_the_query;
      if( $wp_the_query === $query && $query->is_home() ) {
      $query->set( 'cat', '4' );
      }

      }

      NOTE: cat = 4, that means you only display category that has an ID of 4 on your home page or front-page.

      Hope that helps.

  29. Hello, we seem to be having some problem with the thumbnails, they do not re-size and look extremely unprofessional on the homepage. Any way to fix this? We love the theme and would like to use it in the future.

    • The way the theme handles thumbnails definitely needs some work. We’ve got a much better approach in our latest theme which we do plan to roll back to Noteworthy too. Probably in the next couple of weeks.

  30. I love this theme.
    But I’m getting HTTP 500 error when loading footer.php.

    Other admin pages seem to load fine.

    Anybody know how to resolve this?
    Thank you.

    • Hi Vanessa,

      Are you trying to access footer.php directly? This is a template file not an admin page so not sure what you mean.

      Cheers

      Charles

  31. Hello, I just got your theme and I love it!

    But I have a problem on the home page I can`t make the text appear under the word feature.

    How can I solve that problem? I am new with wordpress so it is a little confusing

    Thank you in advance

    • Hi, I’m sorry but I’m not sure what you mean? I think you are wanted to know how to add posts to the list of “Featured” posts to the right of the main hero image? The best way to do this is to use the sticky posts feature to control which posts appear here.

  32. Hello!
    I’m using your Noteworthy theme and I’ve found it great! The only thing, I don’t want to resize the featured image of the first post on the homepage (the one you see on top-left). How can edit the code?

    I’ve tried to do it on the script.js, but even if I delete all the functions, I still don’t get what I want.

    Any help will be superwelcome, thanks! :)

    • Hi Davide, we’re running to keep up with support requests at the moment, but one of our next priorities is to update Noteworthy to better handle the featured images. We hope to have this update released in the next couple of weeks.

  33. Great theme.

    Is there any way to get the two blank squares at the end of the page filled with Content/Posts.
    Any reason why they are left blank?

    i.e. it seems that the limit on the home page is 10 posts plus a main story. Thanks

    • Hi Jonathan, yes there is thankfully. You can go to Settings > Reading and adjust the number of posts that appear in the grid there. Make it a number divisible by three to display a full grid on the home page.

  34. I love this theme, Charles, good work! I have a comment.

    In the ‘Have your say’ column on my site, It’d be nice to have each user’s tag hyperlink a different colour so they’re user ID is differentiated from their comment. I’m going to try to play around with the CSS in a moment but thought I’d mention it as a theme update – I think it’d make a nice difference to the column/widget.

    Cheers and thanks,

    Tim

  35. Thanks Charles, I did look around and now I’m not to worried about. It seems Bing just likes to ignore me until I started adding in Schema. Lol. I only have one more issue I can’t seem to fix. The google rich snippets tool keeps bringing back
    Warning: Missing required field “entry-title”
    Warning: Missing required field “updated”
    Warning: Missing required hCard “author”
    I have found sites telling me to go fix it in the single php file. But the items they are telling me to replace with a different code isn’t in that file, or others that I could find.

    Again any help would be greatly appreciated :0

    • Hi, I’m not familiar with Theme Tweaker so I don’t know how it works, but the likely cause is because some of the colors are actually images which Theme Tweaker won’t be able to change.

  36. Hi, Brilliant theme . hope you can help here

    Could you please tell me how I can increase the height of the background image gray.png to 180px plus I would like to be able to place a logo on the left side of this image.

    I gave it shot by trying to enlarge the height of the gray.png and then added a logo to the left uploaded but it continued to repeat all down the page added background no-repeat but it didn’t help.

    My site
    http://insurrey.biz

    Cheers

    Ken

    • Hi @ken

      I hope you are having a good day.

      I’m a bit confuse on what you’re trying to accomplish, you want the gray.png to increase the size to 180px, gray.png image is relatively positioned so it automatically increase its height when the site content is increasing the height.

      And you want to add the logo in the left side of gray.png? its kind confusing
      - How about just add your logo before social icons? gray.png is repeated so if you only edit gray.png and add your logo in there, that’s really a silly idea.

      My suggestion add your logo before social icons or use the default one and only use image.

      Hope that helps.

  37. Loving the theme. Thanks much! Anyone know how to get the menu to show on top of the hero post image in mobile browsers (iphone/ipad)? As is, it hides behind the hero image. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Cheers.

    • I should clarify… the pull-down menu. I can see the menu, but the categories that pull down when you highlight the menu (or menu category depending on portrait or landscape mode) are hidden behind the hero image.

    • Hi @T Whennen

      Thanks for using our theme.

      I’m a bit confuse on your comment, can you just send us screenshot?
      So the menu is display under your hero posts image in mobile browser?

      Thanks,

        • Hi,

          Thanks for the screenshot, I’m not sure if this work for you maybe better give us your site domain to investigate more.
          1. open style.css and
          2. at line #450 with an class of div.menu ul li ul.sub-menu, div.menu ul li ul.children{} increase the number of z-index code to 999999.

          Hope that helps.

          • There wasn’t a z-index in that area, so i added one to the line you indicated above. There was no change in the mobile browser. I think it’s a matter of pushing the image behind the main navigation at the top… i’ll play around for a bit and see if I can figure it out. Not a huge deal. Cheers!

          • Yeah sorry my bad the z-index thing is in default.css that might help then, yeah CSS is not hard to play with ;)

    • Hi Kyle, I think that will take a bit more than dropping the Adsense code into the editor. I expect you’ll need to apply some CSS as well because the theme is responsive to browser size and you don’t want to break that. The home page is controlled by the index.php template file. I would suggest that rather than putting an ad there you adjust the default number of posts displayed per page under Settings > Reading and set this to some multiple of 3, say 12. This will complete the grid of latest posts.

  38. We have multiple authors, so on the main page, I am wanting to display author names under the article title and on single post page, I am wanting to display the author image somewhere.

    I have used “coffee 2 codes” “Author Images” plugin successfully on other themes, but I can’t figure out a way to make it work with Noteworthy.

    Thanks for your help!

    • Hi,

      Thanks for using our theme.

      Sorry but we didn’t try that plugin or even see it in action, can you send us screenshot in your theme single page or site url?
      There is still a solution to display author images or description, but it require HTML knowledge.
      1. open content-single.php (this located in your theme files)
      2. add this code to where you want to display author avatar and description

      <div class="author-avartar">
      <?php echo get_avatar( get_the_author_meta('ID'), 90 ); ?>

      <h3>About the author</h3>
      <p><?php echo get_the_author_meta('description'); ?></p>
      </div>

      Hope that helps.

      • That worked. Thanks for your help!

        You can see the blog in action by clicking my name on this comment.

        I also figured out how to add the author names under post titles on the main home page by inserting the following inside the h2 code:
        by

  39. Hi everyone, thanks for this theme! :) Can you help me with my problem? … I just want to totally hide one category on the main screen. How can I ingore category in the lastest posts, feautured posts…and other..

    Of course I want to show posts from this category on the category page :D :)

    Thanks! :)

    • Hi @adam,

      Thanks for using our theme.

      Yeah np, ready to get your hand dirty?
      1. open index.php and at line #92 replace the whole div to this <div id="post-<?php the_ID(); ?>" <?php post_class('item col300'); ?>>
      2. in your style.css add this code anywhere you want #main category-uncategorized change uncategorized to the category slug you want to hide in main page

      Hope that helps.

  40. Hi, great theme.

    I have two questions.
    1) how to change word “featured” in the main area in something else?
    2) how to change “Leave a reply” and other words in comments form?

    • Hi,

      Thanks for using our theme.

      1) how to change word “featured” in the main area in something else?
      - In index.php at line #60
      2) how to change “Leave a reply” and other words in comments form?
      - open comments.php at line #55 replace comment_form() to this

      $comment_form = array(
      'title_reply' => 'Leave a Comment',
      );
      comment_form( $comment_form, $post->ID );

      Hope that helps.

  41. If I am looking at a category page using the latest version of Internet Explorer for Windows 8, I cannot see the titles of the articles over the pictures. The titles appear otherwise. Is there a way to fix this or is there an update you need to make on your end?

    • Hi @larry

      Thanks for using our theme

      “I cannot see the titles of the articles over the pictures. The titles appear otherwise.”
      - You can’t see the titles but the titles appear, what do you mean?

      I also review it my Windows 8 with latest IE 10 and it works fine.

    • Hi,

      Thanks for using our theme.

      Follow these fix
      1. .comment-meta{} in default.css at line #814 and remove background{} // this remove comment.png
      2. .commentlist li.comment .comment-content{} add float: right; width: 650px; in style.css at line #1175
      3. .commentlist footer.comment-head{} add float: left; in style.css at line #1081

      Hope that helps

      • That partly works. That pesky comment.png is still there.

        I don’t have a file called default.css and there’s no background{} after .comment-meta{} in style.css

        Also, I went with width: 70%; for .commentlist li.comment .comment-content so it would be responsive to different width browsers. 650px; was making the author info tuck under.

        It also seems to flow better if I leave off the float: left; for .commentlist footer.comment-head{}

  42. I am having an issue with the featured image being posted in front of the post title. How can I fix it to where the post title will show up in of the featured image???

    • Hi @thomas,

      Thanks for using our theme.

      This can solve using z-index CSS code, for better solution please give us your domain name if you’re working in live or add this code #content .item-content h2{ x-index: 999999; } anywhere in style.css

      Hope that helps.
